The world’s largest hotel chain plans to eliminate the familiar single-use bottles by the end of 2020.
Marriott International announced that it would be phasing out miniature bottles of shampoo, conditioner and bath gel in favor of larger, pump-topped bottles at its 7,000 properties worldwide by December 2020. The company estimates the move will keep 1.7 million pounds of plastic — or about 500 million tiny bottles — from ending up in landfills each year.
Plastic takes more than 400 years to decompose, taking a toll on the environment, especially considering that roughly 8.8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the world’s oceans each year. And while hundreds of millions of pounds of plastic are produced annually, only a small fraction of it is recycled.
